2005-02-25 - 7:42 p.m. We Love Dirty Martinis RexDog, my big silly solid black German Shepherd Dog and I, that is, love dirty martini olives! He watches me in rapture until he gets the martini olive he craves. Dogs are strange and wonderful beings. Tonight I experienced the Christo-Jeanne Claude art installation, The Gates, in New York's Central Park. It officially closes Sunday night, and the over 1,400 people involved in the project (the artists have paid over three million covering their salaries) will begin having it dismantled, and afterwards, recycled. Very breathtaking, awesome, and amazing, especially against the twilight-to-night-time sky, with some of the panels moving slowly in the wind backlit by the park's pathway lanterns, and silhouettes of people walking between them. Everyone driving on the park transverse just had to slow down and take a collective breath...some of the Gates marched over the natural stone bridges above, some led from paths above right down to the edge of the traffic transverse, within touching distance. It was beautiful...I've never seen cross-park traffic, yellow cabs and all, move at such a gently reverent, silent pace. I'm fascinated by this large-scale art, aka Oldenborg, for example, perhaps because my own art is created on such a focused, small scale. Wow. Go see, if you can. Back to my Dirty Martini. It is, after all, Friday night.
