The More I Know Of People

The More I Know of People, the More I Love My Dog

I know this quote by heart, but failed to find the author when researching it on the web.

I'm amazed at how strong I've become. The other day I took a stand with my boss, deciding not to do my supervisor's neglected work; she was on the phone and computer all day checking travel plans, but neglected to post cash receipts. At the end of the day my boss asked if all the work was ready for closing, and I said, I've done all of mine - and so has Jody - he said, and what about Paula? I said, she didn't post anything today. He said, This is not good. Can you do it? I said nothing, but got back to him later. I can, I said, but I have my own work to do, including a $160,000+ invoice to Coke, and to do her work, I'd have to put my own work aside. That is just wrong, I thought. My job is not to do her job. Today two things happened: there was a terse email from Paula saying how I was not a "team player" and should have just done her work and covered for her. The second thing that happened - I was called into the President's office and praised both by him and my boss for going above and beyond what was expected of me. I was told about a raise. I'd been exceeding my deadlines by 10 days for the last three months at least, something they hadn't imagined. The company President told me to ignore everyone else's side comments, and just focus on doing my job. They shook my hand and smiled and congratulated me on a job well done. So, when Paula suddenly jumped up from her desk a couple of minutes later and lashed out at me with loud rants about how "childish and disrespectful" I was, (as if I was one of her little children) stomping back and forth, I kept pretty calm and finally said, "Look Paula, stop this now - I have work to do." and she went back to her desk and kept quiet. She's away for a week now.

Today RexDog and Peter and I had a fantastic hike along the Greenbelt Trail under Moses Mountain on Staten Island...the highest point between the topmost tip of Maine and the southernmost end of Key West Florida along the entire Eastern end of the US, 409 feet above sea level. I know - no-one would imagine such terrain existed in New York. We took a trail around a loosetrife swamp choked with bright pink, maybe four foot-tall water-lilies, where a giant darning-needle and smaller damsel-flies and cornflower-blue butterflies and deep burgundy mourning-cloak butterflies paused around us as we walked, as if we were magically stuck in time and space in some vintage Disney epic. There was even a chipmunk peeking out of a hollowed tree-trunk! I told Peter all we needed was a red cape for him and a blue and white gown for me and fat bluebirds singing in circles above our heads. It was a sweet summer day.
