2006-08-27 - 5:40 p.m. All in a New York Minute Ventured outside my apartment for the first time today - only for a bit, to replenish my staples - as always, cat food, and vodka. I couldn't have been out longer than 15 minutes, no more than one block from my apartment, and this is what I experienced... Bought cat food and mozarella cheese at the corner store. My giant basil plant I bought for $7 last weekend at the organic farm stand on my corner has perked up and is ready for a sweet lunch, outdoors, of sliced tomatoes, mozarella, and a drizzle of virgin olive oil.
Next, went to my other NYC corner to Lighthouse Liquors, where I saw the guy behind the counter carefully rolling his pant leg down over a very bloody leg. "What happened to you?" I asked. He said he went home Monday night by cab, got out 1/2 block from his apartment on 119th Street, and a gang of about 15 boys attacked him from behind - he didn't know why, maybe to rob him? But they didn't demand money, and he said, it is a quiet neighborhood, and these people were not from there...he ran to get away, fell, and ripped open his knee. As a typical NY comment I said, Yeah, and you didn't bother with a police report, right? What are they gonna do? and he agreed. I said, You were probably so glad to get back that one half block into your apartment and just collapse into bed...thank god you're still with us, right? You made it through! Good for you! I then purchased my vodka and we shook hands. Next I walked one block to the local Key Food. The finale of Deadwood is on tonight and my neighbors and I are getting together to watch it, but I needed canned peaches badly...whenever Swearengen has a meeting at his whorehouse he makes a point of serving canned peaches...so, I twisted coarse brown paper and raffia around each can and put a vintage-looking tag on each saying, "At least at my meetings, I serve refreshments!" quoting him in the last episode. I invited them here but they don't want to leave their dog alone. So, I'll go over there. Coming out of the Key Food I passed a street vendor and bought a beautiful long Indian skirt, black with gold print, for $10. All in a New York Minute (OK, 15 minutes!)
