Never Complain, Never Explain: Katherine Hepburn

I got *outed* for one of my d-land entries because I mentioned an incident at work. I got called into the President's office. Note: I never said where I worked or mentioned last names - not one thing could be googled - I'm not so naaive - I graciously said I'd take the entry down. End of story. Entry deleted.

I needed a vacation! Good for me: I went on my first vacation in over 15 years to a B&B in Connecticut, just me and my GSD, and it was outrageous! Not only was there a full brunch with crispy sausages, eggs and pastries, eight diff kinds of juice, croissants, bagels, honey, cereals, five different kinds of coffee, fruit, yoghurt, hot oatmeal - there was also a complete dinner with Mexican food, Italian sausage & shell macaroni & peppers and onions, a complete salad bar and all the free beer and wine you'd want - on a room on a cliff overlooking a river, a view with sailboats in the distance, the scent of flowering trees in the air. The dog and I were up every morning at 5 AM going walking. Most people gain weight on vaca - I lost weight. A daily newspaper was under the door every morning. I don't do water, but there was an indoor heated pool and a whirlpool overlooking the cliffs, and a workout room, and a library with a floor-to-ceiling fireplace. I'd awake in the middle of the night and wander down with a book and relax in a soft sofa and have a cup of herbal tea and wait for the sun to come up.

Unlike my slumlord apartment, the kitchen had a *ceiling*, the toilet *flushed*, and there was a shower! There was a full-service kitchen with a microwave oven, popcorn, a coffee-maker, a 24-hour store, free high-speed internet - oh, come on, I was in heaven.

The staff loved the long-haired German Shepherd Dog. and as the only dog there, she was the star attraction. Everyone cuddled with her. There's *that* dog, they'd say! When I'd leave the room to go down to get breakfast she'd throw her big head back and do a deep-throated howl like a giant crazed wolf, but no-one complained. I did bring her back a doggie-plate of sausages and eggs. Then we'd go for another half-hour walk.

I have to do this more often. I have to get away and give myself a chance to breathe!

Last night the German Shepherd Dog and I went out walking by the East River and met sn elderly Hungarian neighbor who fell in love with Gretta and told me a story (love these NYC neighborhood flavorful stories) of how her elderly sister had a dog who'd seen she'd fallen on a kitchen knife and jumped up and barked like crazy at the apartment door until neighbors notified the police, and how grateful she was that the dog saved her sister's life. She bent over and stroked Gretta and told her she was beautiful. I asked her name - Helen. I told her I was glad we met her and I knew Gretta was drawn to her as soon as we were crossing 1st Avenue. "Dogs know things," she said, and took my hand, and smiled.
