2007-09-26 - 6:17 p.m. Looking for "Taz"? The air above is pounding with the staccoto of chopper blades and there is the whine of police sirens...are they looking for "Taz?" Two weeks ago a man was lured out of his apartment on 1st Avenue and fired at three times in the back at the middle of the street...a 19th Precinct command post was stationed on the block awaiting the return of Christobal "Taz" Verdejo to his apartment and the scene of the crime. When I mentioned to Jennifer, the clerk at the corner store, that there were way too many copters circling overhead, she said, "It's because of Bush being at the UN.". I said, "Oh, I thought they were looking for 'Taz' - that guy" referring to the wanted poster in the window. The older wrinkled woman beside me, paying for her hot coffee, laughed and said, "No, obviously they're over the East River because Bush is swimming along making his way to the UN for his speech today...it's terrible; traffic is stalled because everybody is keeping an eye on him!" Imagining the visual, everyone in the deli laughed. Ain't that Amerika!
